‘Get It Back’ is the new album from Hanin Elias, a former member of the Atari Teenage Riot (more on that later), who has delivered a rather stunning electronic record that will challenge you right from the off. Some you may or may not know that Atari Teenage Riot recently reformed after a near ten year hiatus, a period in which neither remaining member of the group spoke to each other. Hanin Elias was meant to be involved in that project which included her co ATR collaborator Alec Empire, however despite providing vocals for the comeback single ‘Activate’, she was unashamedly dropped for what Empire described as delivering vocals which had lost Elias famous screaming voice. Those vocals can now be found on the track ‘Axis Shifting’, which appears on ‘Get It Back’, with Elias setting out to prove that Mr Empire was wrong to drop her and she can go it alone.

Kicking off with the title track, Elias quickly establishes her dynamic voice as being the forefront driving force behind her music. Her voice is high pitched and at times extremely cutting, with her passion directly emanating through her vocals. The music behind her is ferocious too, with debut single ‘Do You Know!!!’ demonstrating often bleak, abstract, and fast pitched electronica which at times can be difficult to keep up with.

Elias has an ear for a range of different genres, with drum and bass, hip hop, house, folk, and pop music all referenced throughout the 11 tracks and 40 minutes. Contemporary comparisons can be drawn with the likes of Teeth, Crystal Castles, and Glass Diamond. ‘Dead Eyes’ is perhaps my favourite track on the record, with its driving beats, spaced out synths, and repeated vocals drawing you in. The inclusion of the Tying Tiffany remix of the accessible ‘Future Noir’ midway through the album demonstrates the ability of Elias to rain in her extreme vocals and beats when required showing off her clear musical knowledge.

‘Get It Back’ is clearly not an album for every occasion, with its dark themes and destructive nature not lending itself easily to the mass market. However if you’re able to get past its abrasive edge you will be pleasantly surprised at the subtlety and craft that has gone into making a challenging yet ultimately rewarding electronica album.

Dass das Leben auf einer beschaulichen Insel von Französisch-Polynesien im Süd-Pazifik recht inspirierend sein kann, glaubt man gern. Hanin Elias hat das beste daraus gemacht, nämlich ein neues Album. Mit „Get it back“ startet die ex-Frontfrau der Digital-Hardcore-Rocker Atari Teenage Riot in 2011 durch. Die unsanfte Trennung von ATR ist Geschichte und Hanin Elias präsentiert sich nach einer über fünfjährigen Auszeit auf dem Atoll Huahine mehr denn je als Energiebündel. Für „Get it back“ hat sie von dort aus ihr Netzwerk an Kreativen aus der internationalen Musikszene aktiviert und etliche genreübergreifende Kollaborationen initiiert, die unterschiedlicher und spannender nicht sein könnten.

„Get it back“ ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein Überraschungspaket. Verschiedene Electronica-Styles, Dubstep, Funk, Hip-Hop, Rock, Industrial und Digital Hardcore treffen auf eine längst nicht leiser gewordene Screamerin, Shouterin, Rapperin und Sängerin, die ständig zwischen wildem Raubtier und zahmem Kätzchen pendelt. Jeder Track ist wie ein Mikrokosmos, der – harmonisch ausbalanciert – für sich allein stehen kann und sich gleichzeitg perfekt in die Ganzheit des Albums einzufügen vermag. Schaut man sich die „Kollaborateure“ genauer an, erscheint das gar nicht so selbstverständlich. Neben dem chilenischen Musiker Diego Sagredo der Gruppe ICI, mit dem Hanin Elias die Stücke „Do you know“, „Melancolia“ und „Money“ aufgenommen hat, sind die Berliner Electro-Hip-Hop-Combo Mutfak mit von der Partie, ebenso Vigilante (aus Chile), die hierzulände mit ihrem harten Industrial-Electro längst auf den Tanzflächen angekommen sind, und Tying Tiffany, die für einen Remix des 2001er-Hits „Future Noir“ gewonnen werden konnten. Ein besonders schöner und faszinierender Song, „I want you“, entstand in der Zusammenarbeit mit der aus Tahiti stammenden Gruppe Tikahiri – ein sanftes, mystisch-folkloristisch inspirierters Stück voller Leidenschaft. Ein echter Dancefloor-Smasher wurde mit dem Belgier Yeti Popstar (Velvet Underwear) und den Pariser „digital horror“-Künstlern von Mismerizer produziert - „Dead Eyes“ ist Disco pur.

Wilder könnte die Mischung kaum sein, doch das macht gerade den Reiz von „Get it back“ aus, das trotz der vielen „Beteiligten“ noch immer unverkennbar Hanin Elias ist. Wer keine Berührungsängste und Lust auf ein musikalisches Abenteuer hat, liegt mit dem Comback-Album genau richtig. Als Bonus gibt es einen stylischen Videoclip zu „Do you know“ - digital hardcore visuals mit hohem Schnitttempo. Schön, dass Hanin Elias wieder da ist – welcome back!
